Dawit Kiros Redie

PhD Researcher

NTNU

I am a PhD researcher at the Signal processing group at NTNU with Prof. Stefan Werner. My work focuses on communication-efficient, privacy-aware federated learning and distributed optimization under client heterogeneity and partial participation. I design compression/error-feedback algorithms with theoretical convergence analysis and build scalable experiments in PyTorch on GPU/HPC systems. I am always open to collaborations; feel free to reach out if our interests align.

Experience

NTNU
PhD Researcher and Teaching Assistant
December 2023 – Present Trondheim, Norway
  • Developing privacy-preserving and personalized federated learning methods; studying heterogeneity, compression, and partial participation.
  • Designing communication-efficient training ideas (e.g., sparsification/quantization with error feedback) with theoretical analyses.
  • Building reproducible research code in Python/PyTorch and running controlled sweeps on GPU/HPC environments.
  • Teaching assistant for TTT4275 (Estimation, Detection and Classification) and TTT4120 (Digital Signal Processing).

Johnson Controls
Data Engineer Intern
January 2023 – September 2023 Pune, India
  • Built a data-loss detection service using Spring Boot, automating ~12 hours of manual work.
  • Reduced data processing time by 50% by transitioning Spark jobs to PySpark and optimizing ETL workflows.
  • Engineered synchronization between Snowflake and PostgreSQL to ensure reliable, consistent data flow.
  • Developed a predictive maintenance model using historical equipment data to reduce downtime and maintenance costs.

KIIT University
Teaching Assistant in Data Structures
September 2022 – January 2023 Bhubaneswar, India
  • Supported lectures and labs; provided 1:1 and small-group instruction and grading support.
  • Designed and delivered practice material in C++/Python (arrays, trees, graphs, complexity), improving student engagement and mastery.

KIIT University
Research Intern in AI Applications
July 2020 – September 2020 Bhubaneswar, India
Explored applications of artificial intelligence in power electronics; implemented small prototypes and literature reviews to evaluate feasibility.
